Promote thoughtful conversations with your students as you explore the world of ‘scary’ emotions.

This SEL presentation is a valuable addition to your morning meetings, fostering a deeper understanding of intense emotions and equipping students with effective coping strategies.

This lesson starts with a simple baseline understanding of what emotions are and has students sort them into good and bad categories. It emphasizes that even though scary emotions FEEL bad, they are normal and are part of the human experience.

This lesson not only explores unsettling emotions but also offers practical coping strategies for use with your students. These strategies include techniques like box breathing, mindfulness practices, and physical activity.

Teaching students about moral dilemmas and how to rectify a wrong choice can be a challenging task. Often, children can easily distinguish between right and wrong choices, but the complexities arise when they make the wrong choice. Many students struggle with addressing and correcting their mistakes. This section provides a platform for students to reflect on challenging situations and consider the painful emotions that may arise when they make a wrong choice.

Here, students have the opportunity to discuss ways to address and resolve a problem. They also learn that there are instances where it may not be possible to fully rectify a situation, but they can still make a significant difference by attempting to do the next best thing.

At times, the most effective way to grasp a concept is by witnessing vulnerabilities in others. Young students may not always feel comfortable sharing their deepest fears and truths with trusted friends or adults. However, when they observe a peer expressing such complex emotions through diary entries, they gain a unique opportunity to witness vulnerability and, hopefully, develop the awareness and confidence to express similar complex emotions themselves in the future.

This section also delves into primary emotions and highlights the importance of recognizing that deeper, more intricate emotions often underlie them. Addressing these underlying emotions is essential for a better understanding and the process of healing.
